My mum is an artist, and a lot of my childhood was spent in the backyard with her cutting apples and oranges in half so we could paint on the insides and use them to print patterns, or we’d put leaves under paper and rub crayons over to capture their veins. Other times, I’d wander around on my own in long grass and catch butterflies with my fingers. I was also an avid reader — I used to hide behind the curtains in the early mornings with illustrated Shakespeare works, fairytales about tragically twisted Russian ballerinas (disturbing, now that I’m looking back on it) and whichever Narnia book I was reading at the time (I’m pretty sure Pauline Baynes is my main artistic inspiration even now). And out of that came a deep love for intricate beauty, nature, and sadness, along with the constant need to express these things and hopefully combine them. Yeah, I think that sums it up, pretty much. ^-^
